Highland Lakes

The Highland Lakes were formed in the 1930s and 1940s by a series of dams built to generate hydroelectric power and control flooding on the lower Colorado River.  The result is a chain of seven beautiful, freshwater lakes, five of which are constant level.  The two largest lakes, Lake Buchanan and Lake Travis, fluctuate in depth since they are reservoirs that store water for the region.  All the lakes are available for boating, fishing, swimming and admiring year-round! http://highlandlakes.com

Canyon of the Eagles

Nestled above Lake Buchanan, Canyon of the Eagles takes its name from the American Bald Eagles that winter in the area.  The park showcases the flora and fauna of the area and provides a refuge for several endangered birds.  Throughout the spring and early summer, wildflowers bloom in abundance.  These can be enjoyed along with the stunning views of Lake Buchanan and, from the Observatory, the night sky in all its wonder.  http://canyonoftheeagles.com/

Longhorn Cavern

Buried deep in the Texas limestone is Longhorn Cavern, which offers stunning geologic formations and a year-round temperature of 68oF.  A variety of cavern tours are available to suit every taste and the State Park that surrounds the cavern is rich in history. http://www.visitlonghorncavern.com

Lake Buchanan Waterfalls and Fishing

Lake Buchanan is home to striking waterfalls that rise 30+ feet above it from Fall Creek. In addition to being a great place for an enclosed boat tour, it’s also good for fishing striped bass (“stripers”), largemouth bass, white bass, and catfish.  You’ll be amazed when you see the record fish caught on Lake Buchanan to date: Read more.
